Archie Comics

Archie Andrews, the eternal teenager, was the central character in a comic that kicked off in 1942 and was set in the mythical Riverdale, where nothing too upsetting happens. Fans have followed along since then as Archie and his Riverdale High friends, including two best gal pals, Veronica, and Betty.

Archie comics had its humble beginnings. It first started out as a backup story of the MLJ comics of the 1940s. The MLJ comic book first centered around mostly superheroes that were popular at the time, and from time to time a little story would be featured in the comic about a group of teenagers.

Bob Montana was a cartoonist at the time who liked to draw funny comics about college kids. Around 1941, he was assigned to do a comic about teens. He didn't know anything what teens did, so he decided to just make a couple of college kids who just happened to be 17 and in high school. This is where Archie comics were born. The comics soon became more popular than the super heroes who were the main focus of the comics. The comics were changed from MLJ comics to pep comics and the comics diverted its entire attention to the group of teens.
In 1950s, DAN DECARLO took over the comics. He is often considered the writer who shaped Archie comics into what they are today. When Dan  came along, there was only one kind of Archie comic-pep comics, but Dan changed that. Suddenly Archie got his own comic, Betty and Veronica got their own.

The golden age of Archie comics was in the 1980s - Archie was at his funniest - all other characters were at their funniest, and the environment where they lived was lush and colorful. Everything was incredible - everybody in the strip was loveable, and reading the comics were a great experience for anybody. In fact, the 1980s comics were what got most of us interested in Archie.

But in the late 80's and early 90's Archie's gang started to get a bunch of spin-offs. Then came the 2000s - Archie comics entered its dark ages. Jughead became a self-centered brat - Veronica became a good girl - Betty started to act like a blonde - the comics no longer focused on Archie, but more on Jughead...

    1. Thanks Suman for visiting the blog. I've heard of "Little Lulu & Tubby", but did not read much of these comics. If I find some books and like these characters, I'll try to make a post. :-)

    2. @Suman : Best Archie, for me,from the '80s to '90s when both art and stories were at pick...And once you have read these periods' out-put,the earlier Archie and his gang will look quite cartoonish and kiddish version. And there is nothing to say about the last one decades' worth Archie - as just ordinary and sometime, worthless! In the period of '80s and '90s a NEW character was introduced in Archie Universe and as you know, she was Cheryl Blossom! Her presence helped the series to get over from monotonous Betty-vs-Veronica fight over their common love!

About Little Lulu n Tubby,I read few from internet, then bought a couple of compilation released by darkhorse publisher. The stories were good to ok sort, nothing great(except few rather tops!) but ok overall.Btwn, darkhorse 'reproduction' wasn't up-to-the-mark,sadly!
