Buzz Sawyer - Selected Sundays

Royston Campbell Crane, or simply Roy Crane was born 22nd November 1901 in Abilene,Texas. He did not graduate college, but lived a knockabout life, working as a hand on a cargo ship and riding the rails. In 1922, he began his career as a newspaper cartoonist, working for the 'New York World' and later for the NEA Syndicate and King Features Syndicate. In 1928 he married long-time sweetheart Evelyn Hatcher. In 1950, he won the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award as 'Cartoonist of the Year'.

One recurring problem Crane had in the early days of Buz Sayer was the lack of a good assistant. Because of his high standards, Crane had trouble doing both the dailies and the Sundays. Roy Crane took a great risk in launching Buz Sayer. Buz made its debut at the worst possible time for newspaper features since the depression of 1929.

From out of hundreds of sketches like these
came entertainment for millions....

But Buz Sayer sales went strong in the postwar years - from 153 clients of the daily in 1946, to 295 clients in 1951. The Sundays sale was also climbed from 81 in 1946, to 154 in 1951. By 1951 Crane was getting more than $1500 a week, a hefty addition to the minimal guarantee he had asked for. Buz Sayer was a gamble that eventually well paid off...

The Comics Revue #174 & 175

With summer past, it’s time for an annual tradition here at many of the local libraries, the 'Annual Book Sale' event. I love books, though nowadays I'm no longer an avid book reader. Some of my friends' family members do participate in either adult or children’s summer reading programs, but I never did. 

Sunny Library Book Sale Event - Nov 21-22, 2015

Last Saturday I went to library to return few books & DVDs and by chance noticed a book sale event was going on there. I do buy books time to time, but I never bought books from Library's Book Sale event. So, I just casually stopped by there to see how it goes... and, many thanks to God Almighty, He made me to stop there !!

One bag of books (~ 20 books) cost only $5 !!!

On a big floor there are so many bin of books from so many categories - Fictions, Novels, Short stories, Puzzles, Comics, Magazines, Travels, Hobbies, Science, Math, Competitive Exams, Arts, Films, Music, Educations, Kids Books, Do-by-yourself stuff, Cooking, and so on and on... Most of the books are there in 'Very Good' to 'Near Mint' condition !!

On Saturday they were selling most of the books (any size) for $1 and Sunday's promotion was, a full bag of books (any size) for $5 !!! Roughly 20-25 big/medium size books can be put in one big bag !!

Comics & Graphic Arts section - all books are already sold !!

I grabbed couple of James Patterson's 'Large Print' novels - I love thrillers, mysteries and detective plots. Then I visited the 'Comics and Graphic Arts' area. Two big tables were full of various comics magazines & books - mostly from DC comics. On one side there was lying a bunch of old "Comics Revue" magazines - each for just 25 cents. I grabbed a bunch of them too.

All for just $6.50 !!

"Friends of the Library" is a group of volunteers in Northern California dedicated to supporting the Sunnyvale Public Library. Most of the libraries here does not receives a penny in the annual city budget, outside of staff payroll to support of programs. The municipal budget provides for buildings with books and other materials, and the people to handle them.

The Friends organization, however, transforms those buildings into rich and active community destinations.

Now let's come to the most interesting section of this post - "Comics Revue" magazine. 'Comics Revue' was a bi-monthly anthology magazine for classic comic strips, adventures as well as humor strips, published by Manuscript Press.

No. 174

It featured full color Sunday comic strips including "The Phantom by Lee Falk, Flash Gordon by Dan Barry, Buz Sawyer by Roy Crane, Tarzan by Russ Manning, Steve Canyon by Milton Caniff, Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell, Krazy Kat by George Herriman, Alley Oop by V.T. Hamlim, Casey Ruggles by Warren Tufts, Gasoline Alley by Dick Moores". Daily strips would include "Alley Oop, Sir Bagby, Krazy Kat, Buz Sawyer, Rick O'Shay, and Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell". Most of these are serials, but in every issue a full story is presented. Old, reddish pages immediately bring back great memories and smells of my childhood!

Next day I also went there to buy a 'bag of books' - but I was late - most of the good books were already gone!  On next book sale events I'll not do this same mistake again !!

"Out To Lunch" by J. Seward Johnson Jr. is a famed local statue purchased by the Sunnyvale Public Library in 1985. It is a favorite of the library patrons as they enter the library, as many people have taken their pictures with the statue of the man eating a sandwich.

The sculpture was purchased in 1985 for $40,000 at former Sunnyvale Mayor John Mercer's urging after he saw a similar piece on display in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC while on a business trip. The city council, in meetings prior to February 1985, already had decided the sculpture should be a human form rather than an abstract one.

Buz Sawyer - The War in the Pacific

Buz Sawyer was a popular comic strip created by Roy Crane, one of the innovators of the adventure comic strip. The strip, which originated in 1943 and ran in syndication until 1989, features the globe-spanning adventures of John Buz Sawyer. A chivalrous adventurer, Buz Sawyer was initially a fighter pilot for the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. When the war ended, Buz became a troubleshooter for an oil company. However, civilian life didn’t suit Buz Sawyer all that much, so he re-enlisted in the Navy as a jet pilot in the 1950s, leading to many exciting Cold-War adventures.

 

This book reprints all of the daily strips published during World War-II. Buz serves aboard an aircraft carrier, flies combat missions against the notorious Japanese Zeros, crash lands behind enemy lines, and is captured by a Japanese submarine. Buz fights the Japanese and romances beautiful island dames in this first year of Roy Crane's classic comic strip. The book will include all of the daily Buz Sawyer strips from 1943 and 1944. (Manuscript Press)

The quality of the reprinted strips varies a lot in this book. Most of them are muddy. Both as a result of bad source material and too low resolution when scanned. On the other hand there are a few pages that looks as if they are scanned straight from proofs. Other seems to be scanned in high resolution but from bad sources.  

The book also includes a selection of the best of the Sunday strips, which featured Buz Sawyer's pal and gunner, Roscoe Sweeny. 

As a great comic strip artists/writers, Roy Crane was largely overlooked. He was a master storyteller and his work still continues to inspire cartoonists, even today...

The Magical World of Phineas & Ferb

We generally attach the word 'cartoons' with 'kids' - but how many times you see a cartoon which was made for kids but was smart enough to entertain adults? Most of today’s kids entertainment is homogenized until it’s been drained of all creativity - here comes "Phineas and Ferb". It makes me think of old school cartoons. My whole family have been watching since before we had kid - and now our kid is hooked too !

Love goes beyond generations...

"Phineas and Ferb" is an American animated comedy-musical television series. The series officially premiered on February 2008 on Disney Channel. It is an intelligent, very well-directed, educational yet funny comedy series about two stepbrothers and their only sister. It is storyboarded instead of scripted, and as a result, it’s just wildly funny. Filled with original musical numbers, pop cultural references, celebrity guest stars and many jokes aimed at adults, Phineas and Ferb offers something for every age group. 

The Main Characters
The show’s roster includes more three-dimensionality than many live action dramas. The hero, Phineas Flynn is part of a blended family. His stepbrother, Ferb Fletcher, is his best friend. Phineas is portrayed as a selfless, intelligent, innocent, and creative child. Phineas lives in the fictional town of Danville (part of the Tri-State Area), in a large, suburban neighborhood. He generally comes up with most of his ideas while sitting with Ferb in his backyard.  As a means to defeat boredom, the two step-brothers devise outrageous activities throughout their summer vacation. They invent elaborate, scientific devices to have outrageous adventures, much to the chagrin of  their controlling sister, Candace, whose life has no meaning unless she’s busting her brothers. Quite often they embark on some grand new project, which annoys Candace, who frequently tries to reveal their shenanigans to her and Phineas' mother, Linda Flynn-Fletcher, and less frequently to Ferb's father, Lawrence Fletcher. There’s also few other important characters like Baljeet and Buford, the nerd and the bully who can’t seem to function without one another. 

Phineas, Ferb and Perry the Platypus

The show also features "Perry the Platypus" (known as Agent P) whose mission is to foil any and all plots perpetrated by a rather unsuccessful ‘evil’ scientist named Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, who’s famous for his hilarious rants and ‘inator’ inventions (Shrink-inator, Changenator-inator, Remote Control-inator, etc.). Dr. Doofenshmirtz is a mad scientist driven largely by a need to assert his evilness. Doofenshmirtz, the villain secretly just wants to be best friends with his heroic nemesis. Sometimes, other villains scoff at his level of evil. The two plots intersect at the end to erase all traces of the boys' project just before Candace can show it to their mother. This usually leaves Candace very frustrated.

Baljeet and Buford - the nerd and the bully 

This series is also known for its musical numbers. Almost all of the songs in various episodes are just too downright catchy! Every eleven-minute episode of the show includes an original song, written and performed just for that episode. The show's creators write and record each number, and vary musical tempo depending on each song's dramatic use. The music has earned the series a total of four Emmy nominations. The show was the longest running Disney XD Original Series.

Let's have a quick taste of one of their great adventures here. One of my favorite story is: "It's About Time!"

PLOT:
A tricky time machine turns an ordinary day of summer vacation into a struggle for survival when Phineas, Ferb, and Candace end up in the Jurassic period! The kids must avoid being trampled by terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rexes and find a way to make it back to their own time, before mom and dad find out! Meanwhile, Perry the Platypus discovers that Dr. Doofenshmirtz has a brand-new nemesis: Peter the Panda! 

After a very successful run for seven long years, the show was ultimately ended after 126 episodes, five one-hour specials, and a Disney Channel Original movie in June 2015. Animated cartoons don’t usually get to say goodbye, but this is not just another ordinary cartoon shows!  Dan Povenmire, one of the co-creators,  said that the decision to end the series was made because they were afraid of the series going stale.

ক্ষুদে মানুষের গল্প - ইজনোগুড ও জাদু পানীয়

আমার ছোটোবেলায় এখনকার মতো সায়েন্স ফিকশন মূলক গল্প, কমিকস বা অ্যানিমেশান ম্যুভির আধিক্য একেবারেই ছিলো না। হাতে গোনা যে ক'টি সায়েন্স ফিকশন গল্প সেই বয়সে পড়েছিলাম তার মধ্যে বেশ ভালো লাগতো 'টাইম ট্রাভেল' সম্পর্কিত গল্পগুলো পড়তে। এরপরেই ভালো লাগতো ওষুধ বা কোনো কিছুর প্রভাবে হঠাৎ করে ক্ষুদে হয়ে যাওয়া মানুষের কীর্তি-কাহিনী পড়তে। 'টাইম ট্রাভেল' নিয়ে একটা বড়সড় নিবন্ধ লেখার ইচ্ছা অনেকদিন ধরেই মনে মনে পুষে বেড়াচ্ছি, তবে আমাদের আজকের এই পোস্ট হলো হঠাৎ করে ক্ষুদে হয়ে যাওয়া মানুষের কীর্তিকলাপ নিয়ে। 


কমিকসের মধ্যে প্রথম কোথায় এই ধরণের গল্প পড়েছি তা এই মুহুর্তে সঠিকভাবে মনে আসছে না।  তবে বহুবছর আগে দেব সাহিত্য কুটিরের এক পূজাবার্ষিকীতে 'শ্রী নারায়ন দেবনাথ' রচিত ও অঙ্কিত এই ধরনের ছোট্ট একটি ছবিতে গল্প পড়েছিলাম। সেটিই খুব সম্ভবত: ক্ষুদে মানুষদের নিয়ে পড়া আমার প্রথম কমিকস। 

'পূরবী' পূজাবার্ষিকীতে প্রকাশিত  চিত্র কাহিনী: 'গল্প না সত্যি !'

ইন্টারনেটের কর্মদক্ষতার সাহায্যে খোঁজ নিয়ে পেয়ে গেলাম সেই হারানো গল্পটিকে,  নাম ছিলো: "গল্প না সত্যি !" - প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল 1972 সালের "পূরবী" পূজাবার্ষিকীতে। সেই গল্পটিতে অবশ্য গল্পের নায়ক ('গোকুল') তন্দ্রাবশবর্তী হয়ে চলে গিয়েছিলো এক অদ্ভুত স্বপ্নের জগতে, যেখানে সে হয়ে যায় এক্কেবারে পুতুলের মতো ছোট্ট একটি মানুষ। নানান বিক্ষিপ্ত ঘটনার মধ্যে দিয়ে চলতে চলতে হঠাৎ করেই তার তন্দ্রা একসময় কেটে যায়, আর সে ফিরে আসে বাস্তব জগতে। গল্পটি এই পরিনত বয়সে আবার নতুন করে পড়লে হয়তো খুব আহামরি কিছু লাগবে না, কিন্তু মনে আছে সেই বয়সে পড়ে আমি অভিভূত হয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। বিশেষ করে গল্পটিতে আঁকা পাখিটির সাথে আমাদের বাড়িতে যত্রতত্র ঘুরে বেড়ানো চড়াই পাখিগুলির অস্বাভাবিক মিল খোঁজা শুরু করে দিয়েছিলাম।  


তখনকার দিনে প্রকাশিত ইন্দ্রজাল কমিকসের বেতাল বা অরন্যদেবের বেশ কিছু গল্পতেও এরকম ক্ষুদে মানুষের খোঁজ মিলতো। তাদের মধ্যে যেটির কথা সর্বপ্রথম মনে আসে সেটি হলো "বেতাল ও ক্ষুদে মানুষ" - সেই গল্পটিতে দেখা যায় রহস্যময় ক্ষুদে মানুষদের রাজকুমার, 'ভ্লাড'-এর প্রেমিকা ('মেলোডী') ধরা পড়ে যায় এক লোভী ব্যারণের খপ্পরে। বেতাল নিজের জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে অবশেষে সেই বন্দী রাজকুমারীকে উদ্ধার করে। এরকম মিষ্টি অথচ রোমাঞ্চকর কমিকস সেই বয়সে খুব বেশি একটা পড়িনি। 

Phantom# 205 - The Little People

এবার চলে আসি ছায়াছবির জগতে - অ্যানিমেশান ম্যুভিগুলির মধ্যে প্রথম এই ধরনের যে সিনেমাটি দেখে দারুন মজা পেয়েছিলাম সেটি হলো "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)"। হারিয়ে যাওয়া বেসবল খোঁজার জন্যে বিজ্ঞানী ওয়েনের ল্যাবে  ঢুকে পড়ে একদল বাচ্চা ছেলেপুলে। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যবশত তারা ওয়েনের সৃষ্ট 'Shrink Ray'-র প্রভাবে সঙ্কুচিত হয়ে পরিনত হয় এক ইঞ্চিরও কম লম্বা, ক্ষুদে ক্ষুদে মানুষে। এদিকে বিজ্ঞানী ওয়েন ল্যাবে ফিরে এসে, অ্যাতোসব কিছু না-জেনেশুনেই সেই যন্ত্রটিকে রাগ করে ধ্বংস করে ফেলেন। অত:পর সেই ক্ষুদে হয়ে যাওয়া ছেলেপুলের দল কি করে আবার তাদের বাস্তব জগতে স্বমহিমায় ফিরে আসবে, সেই নিয়েই আদ্যন্ত টানটান উত্তেজনায় ভরা এই ম্যুভিটি। এটি সে'সময়ে অ্যাতোটাই পপুলার হয়েছিলো যে পরে এর বেশ কয়েকটা sequel-ও বানানো হয়।

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Film (1989)

পরবর্তীকালে আরো বেশ কিছু অ্যানিমেশান ম্যুভি দেখেছিলাম এইরকম ক্ষুদে প্রাণীদের নিয়ে - যেমন ANTZ, A Bug's Life, Toy Story, ইত্যাদি - সবগুলিকে এখানে উল্লেখ করতে গেলে অনেক সময় লেগে যাবে। তবে যেটির কথা না-বললেই নয়, সেটি হলো প্রখ্যাত ডিরেক্টর Chris Wedge-এর ম্যুভি 'EPIC' (2013) - অফুরন্ত মজা, আদ্যন্ত টানটান উত্তেজনা ও অ্যাডভেঞ্চারে ভরপুর এরকম অসাধারণ ফ্যামিলি-ম্যুভি খুব একটা বেশী হয় না। অ্যানিমেশান ম্যুভি প্রেমিকেরা, যাঁরা এই সিনেমাটি এখনও দেখেন নি, তাঁরা যে কি মিস করছেন, তা নিজেরাও জানেন না। 

'EPIC' Movie  (2013)

"EPIC" হলো William Joyce-এর ছোটোদের জন্যে লেখা বই "The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs" অবলম্বনে করা এক অসাধারণ অ্যানিমেটেড CGI movie - গল্পটিতে একটি teenage মেয়ে একেবারে ছোট্টটি হয়ে গিয়ে চলে যায় সাধারণ মানুষের অগোচরে থাকা পাখিদের গোপন জগতে। সেই দুনিয়াতেও ঘটে চলে ভালো ও মন্দের অবিরাম লড়াই। একের পর এক নানান দু:সাহসিক ঘটনা-দূর্ঘটনার মধ্যে দিয়ে অবশেষে হয় মন্দের পরাজয়, আর নায়িকাও ফিরে আসে তার বাস্তব জগতে - সশরীরে, স্বমহিমাতেই। 


এই পোস্টের সাইজ আর না-বাড়িয়ে অত:পর চলে আসি এ সপ্তাহের গল্পে।  এটিও হলো ক্ষুদে হয়ে যাওয়া এক মানুষের গল্প। তবে এই গল্পে কুটিল বুদ্ধির ইজনোগুড চায় এক জাদু পানীয়ের সাহায্যে খলিফাকে সঙ্কুচিত করে নিজের পকেটে পুরতে, কিন্তু কপালের ফেরে সে নিজেই হয়ে যায় সংকুচিত !!

Alex Raymond created 'Flash Gordon'' to compete with Buck Rogers. Not stopping there, he went on to create 'Jungle Jim' as a rival to Tarzan of the Apes. Raymond also created 'Secret Agent X-9' along with 'Dashiell Hammett' and 'Rip Kirby', a two-fisted but intellectual detective.  Rip Kirby is considered by many to be Raymond's finest effort. It was his last as he dies in an auto accident while still creating the strip. Raymond is considered one of the three greatest comic creators of all time.

Rip Kirby was translated into French, Spanish and many other European languages as well as the in the Asian subcontinent and we all enjoyed Rip Kirby comics all the time.

ইজনোগুড এবং তুর্কী পাজল (Jigsaw Turk)

'ইজনোগুড'-এর নামের মধ্যেই বলে দেওয়া আছে যে 'He is no good'!  ইজনোগুডের জীবনে খাওয়া-দাওয়া, বাড়িঘর বা অর্থের কোনও সমস্যা নেই - সমস্যা বলতে আছে একটাই, সেটা হলো কি করে সে "বাগদাদের খলিফাকে হটিয়ে নিজে খলিফা হবে" !! ঠিক অনেকটা ইন্ডিয়ান ক্রিকেটের "শ্রীনিবাসন" মহাশয়ের মতো। খলিফাকে মসনদ থেকে হটাতে সে নেমে পড়ে একের পর এক দুনম্বরী, কদর্য অভিযানে। 'ঘরের খেয়ে বনের মোষ তাড়াতে' সে কখনোই পিছু-পা হয় না যদি তাতে খলিফাকে ক্ষমতাচ্যুত করার বিন্দুমাত্র সম্ভাবনা থেকে থাকে। কিন্তু প্রতিবারই ভাগ্যের দোষে আর কপালের ফেরে, তার প্রতিটি চালই ব্যুমেরাং হয়ে তার দিকে ফিরে আসে। কিন্তু তবুও তার বদবুদ্ধির অফুরন্ত ভাঁড়ারে কখনোই ভাঁটা পড়ে না!!

বিখ্যাত ফরাসী কমিকস লেখক ও শিল্পী, রেনে গোসিনির সৃষ্ট অন্যতম পপুলার কমিকস ক্যারেক্টার হলো "ইজনোগুড" - যদিও এইসব গল্পগুলির কোনোটাতেই ইউদেরজো ছবি আঁকেননি, কিম্বা ছবির মান ইউদেরজোর স্ট্যান্ডার্ডে না-পৌঁছালেও, গল্পের মধ্যে অফুরন্ত মজার ঘাটতি কিন্তু কখনোই লক্ষ্য করা যায় না। 

আসন্ন দেবীপক্ষে সবার মুখে হাসি ফোটাতে এসে গেলো 'ইজনোগুড'-এর সর্বশেষ প্রকাশিত গল্পবই থেকে একটি দারুণ মজার গল্প, বাংলাতে  অনুবাদিত হয়ে!! বইটির প্রচ্ছদপট সজ্জায় সহায়তা করেছেন রূপক ঘোষ মহাশয়। দেখা যাক ইজনোগুড বাংলায় কতোটা পপুলার হয়......

Tex Willer - the Italian Comics Hero

Tex Willer is a "veritable legend". The Tex stories have been published uninterruptedly for over fifty years, making him the longest-lived character of Italian comic strips and, together with Superman and Batman, one of the most enduring characters in comics worldwide. As familiar in Italy as Ferraris and pizzas, he continues to have hundreds of thousands of readers and aficionados.

As a character Tex belongs to the world of Wild West, he very often finds himself caught up in adventures that take him almost beyond the boundaries of reality, into "Twilight Zone" adventures. 

Tex is a tough guy with a strong own sense of justice, and he is a ranger. Tex fights against outlaws, unscrupulous landowners, corrupt politicians and wheeler-dealers. He is a defender of the weak and the oppressed, and he's always been staunchly anti-racist, and a friend of the Indians, which is amazing for a character created in 1948! By marrying an Indian and throwing his lot in with the Native Americans, Tex prefigured the anti-racist themes of 1970s Westerns. And this is another demonstration of how great this serial is.

Tex's most notorious skill is his uncanny aim, over the years he has shown to be able to shot with extreme accuracy with both pistols and rifles. He's fully ambidextrous and capable of handling two pistols at once with ease. Among his most spectacular feats he was able to shot down six coins on the top six poles with riding at full speed. 

Quite obviously Tex his also a incredibly skilled rider, having fully mastered the technique to drive a horse using only the legs and to remain attached while dangling from the side of the animal. Also Tex is famous from his incredibly powerful punches, usually described as "like a mule's kick". This ability is frequently used as a interrogation tool, having Tex punching the suspect until he confess. 

Another important skill of Tex is tracking, he is capable of following trail several days old. While he never had any from of formal education Tex has a extensive knowledge of the natural world, especially regarding the habits of animals, obtained through years of careful observation during his travels. Tex is fluent in both Spanish and Navajo.

Tex had a son, named 'Kit Willer' with a Native American woman, named Lilyth, the daughter of a Navajo Chief. Later, Tex himself went on to become the Chief of the Navajo tribe.

Tex Willer - the Italian Comics Hero

For many years, the Tex stories were not set in any historical period, but Tex fought in the Civil War. He decimated the Dalton Gang, defeated Butch Cassidy's "Wild Bunch", met Geronimo and fought on the side of the revolutionaries in Mexico.

Tex Willer is the longest running Italian comic book. First created in 1948 and continuing today. Over 1,100 regular Tex Willer comics have been published. Tex has worldwide appeal, in the Nordic countries his adventures rate almost as much admiration as those of the Donald Duck family of books.


CREATION:
Tex was created by writer Gian Luigi Bonelli and artist Aurelio Galleppini (better known by his nom-de-plum, Galep) in 1948. Tex was created alongside another character called "Occhio Cupo" (Dark Eye), a dashing swordsman in the style of Alexandre Dumas. Originally Occhio Cupo was meant to be the main character and Tex was to have more of secondary role, but his incredible success changed the situation, and Occhio Cupo was abandoned after just a few issues.

Tex's publication has always been a sort of family affair. The first publisher was Tea Bonelli, Gianluigi's wife, and later their son Sergio took over the business.

Quick & Flupke - কষে বাঁধো সিটবেল্ট

Quick & Flupke হলো বিশ্বখ্যাত বেলজিয়ান কমিকস আর্টিস্ট Herge-র আঁকা ও লেখা অন্যতম বিখ্যাত কমিকস-স্ট্রিপ, যদিও টিনটিনের মতো এগুলো তেমন জনপ্রিয় হয়নি। Herge-র মৃত্যর বহু আগে থেকেই এই কমিকসটি বন্ধ হয় যায় - খুব সম্ভবত টিনটিনের তুমুল জনপ্রিয়তার কাছে Quick & Flupke আর দাঁড়াতে পারেনি। 'ব্রাসেলস'বাসী এই দুই  'street urchins' কে নিয়ে প্রায় ৩১০টি ছোট ছোট কমিকস স্ট্রিপ লেখা হয়েছিলো। "Euro Books India" (a subsidiary of Egmont, UK) 2008 সালে সেগুলি নিয়ে ১১টি বই ইংরাজীতে অনুবাদ করে প্রকাশ করেছিলো। কিন্তু কোনো এক অজ্ঞাত কারণে সেগুলি বহুদিনই হলো আউট অফ প্রিন্ট। UK থেকেও এই বইগুলি ধীরে ধীরে প্রকাশিত হচ্ছে - অনুবাদ করেছেন David Radzinowicz - যদিও "Euro Books India" থেকে প্রকাশিত বইগুলিতে অনুবাদকের নাম জানা যায় না।

তবে টিনটিনের গল্পের মূল চরিত্রগুলির তুলনায় 'ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ'-র প্রতি Herge কিছুটা অবহেলাই দেখিয়েছেন। কিছু স্ট্রিপে দেখা যায় যে দুর্ঘটনায় বা বিস্ফোরণে ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ মারা গিয়ে স্বর্গে চলে গেছে, আবার পরের স্ট্রিপেই তিনি তাদেরকে বেমালুম ফেরৎ এনেছেন, কোনোরকম ব্যাখ্যা বা সঙ্গতি ছাড়াই। বেশ কিছু স্ট্রিপে দেখা যায় গরমকালেও তিনি ফিলিপকে গলায় স্কার্ফ পরিয়ে রেখেছেন। পুলিশকে এই সব স্ট্রিপে একেবারেই ছেলেমানুষ হিসাবে দেখানো হয়েছে। ক্যুইক বা ফিলিপের সাথে Agent-P-র, বয়স ছাড়া আর তেমন কোনো পার্থক্য খুঁজে পাওয়া যায় না। কিশোর বয়সের তুলনায় ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপের করা কিছু কিছু অ্যাক্সিডেন্ট বেশ মারাত্মক ধরনের। কিন্তু ক্রমাগত দুষ্টুমি করে যাওয়া স্বত্তেও তাদেরকে তেমন কোনো শাস্তি পেতে দেখা যায় না। হয়তো এ'সবেরই বদলা স্বরূপ একটি স্ট্রিপে দেখা যায় যে ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ Hergeকে তাঁর নিজের বাড়ি থেকে কিডন্যাপ করে নিয়ে গিয়ে নিজেদের খুশিমতো স্বীকারোক্তি লিখিয়ে নিচ্ছে। 


টিনটিনের গুটিকতক গল্পে Herge ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপকে নামমাত্র ভুমিকায় এনেছিলেন - নিচের ছবিতে সেগুলির কয়েকটির উল্লেখ করা হলো। গল্পগুলির নাম নিশ্চয় আলাদা করে বলে দিতে হবে না !

গতবছর এই সময় নাগাদ আমি "ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ"-এর একটি বইয়ের অনুবাদ করার দু:সাহস দেখিয়েছিলাম। দেখতে দেখতে গোটা একটা বছর যে কখন ঘুরে গেলো, তা টেরই পেলাম না। এই বছরে আরো একবার সেরকম দু:সাহস করার ইচ্ছা জাগলো মনে। এই ব্লগের তরফ হতে পাঠকদের কাছে পুজা উপহার স্বরূপ এসে গেলো "ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ"-এর আরো একটি নতুন গল্পবই: "কষে বাঁধো সিটবেল্ট"। 

আমাদের সকলের মধ্যেই একটি ছোট্ট 'আমি' লুকিয়ে থাকে - বয়স বাড়ার সাথে সাথে বাস্তবের কঠিন নাগপাশে সেই 'আমি' চাপা পড়ে গেলেও মাঝে মাঝে 'সে' ঠিক বেরিয়ে আসে। আশা করি সকলের কাছেই "ক্যুইক ও ফিলিপ"-এর তিরিশের দশকের ছোট ছোট এই অ্যাডভেঞ্চারগুলি ভালো লাগবে। হারিয়ে যাওয়া ছেলেবেলার কিছু স্মৃতি যদি পাঠকদের মনে ফিরে আসে, তা'হলেই আমার এই অনুবাদ প্রচেষ্টা সফল হবে !
