Gil Jourdan is a Belgian, Paris-based detective comic strip created by Maurice Tillieux. It is considered a great combination of mystery, adventure and humor, and a masterpiece of European comics. Gil has a Bachelor of Law degree - he is young, earnest, shrewd and cool-headed. No mystery can stand up to him and he has quite a merit in solving them given the people he has to work with.
Gil's no mere Tintin in a trenchcoat, either. He's a crafty investigator, a snappy dresser with a degree in criminalogy, a caustic sense of humor and a fierce loyalty to his ex-con assistant (Libellule), and his fiercely loyal tomboy secretary (Queue-de-Cerise). His police contact, and sometime-foil, is Inspector Crouton, a thirty year cop, honest but not overly swift, who owes much of his professional success to Gil's brains and occasional helping hand.
From the start Jourdan was hardly the sort of hero who was out for Justice in itself. His main motivation was earning money and exposing a gang of drugs smugglers was really a means of obtaining a big break from which he profited in many ways.
Series like "The Adventures of Tintin" are based in spotlessly clean homes and locations, where as Jourdan's world is made up of dusty offices, littered streets, wet docks and mud-splattered farms. Fast and furious car chases also added to its popularity.
“Catch As Catch Can" is a tensed detective tale where a criminal named 'Joe the Syringe' breaks from prison. However not only did Joe jump down a few stories and survive, but it seems with almost super powers he was able to also jump over a 20-foot wall out of the prison. Before you know it, reports of a man hopping across rooftops like a grasshopper come in, and as an insurance agent targeted by Joe disappears, Gil and the gang are stuck right in the middle.

Maurice Tillieux' death in a car accident in 1978 brought an end to the series, though a number of short stories by other artists were drawn and published in homage to him and Jourdan some ten years later. The day of the accident that cost his life, he had an argument with his wife and later she committed suicide using a gun that was part of the collection of Tillieux.
