Steed's Holidays (বাংলায়) - The Avenger Series

"The Avengers" was a spy-fi British TV series created in early 60s by a Canadian named Sydney Newman. The Avengers initially focused on Dr. David Keel (Ian Hendry) and his assistant John Steed (Patrick Macnee). Hendry left after the first series and Steed became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. Steed's most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and later Tara King (Linda Thorson). 

John Steed was a suave, sophisticated, impeccably dressed agent of an unspecified branch of British intelligence service active primarily in 1960-70s. Steed's trademarks were a bowler hat and an umbrella. He was a top agent, skilled in every aspect of intelligence gathering and in several forms of both armed and unarmed combat, and an expert marksman. Steed specialized in unusual and often quite bizarre cases which nobody else could have tackled.

The Avengers, by the mid-sixties, existed in a surreal world which was basically Britain dialed up as far as it would go --- a world of retired Army types in country houses plotting world domination, of disgruntled clowns turned professional assassins, and of sexy women in leather catsuits kicking the stuffing out of beetle-browed henchmen, while the dapper, bowler hatted Steed, umbrella in hand, suavely strode through the chaos to save the nation on a weekly basis. 

By 1969 "The Avengers" was shown in more than 90 countries. ITV produced a sequel series "The New Avengers" (1976-1977) with Patrick Macnee returning as John Steed, and two new partners. In 2007 The Avengers was ranked #20 on TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever.

How Uderzo Met with Asterix & Obelix

Well, this book has not been officially translated to English by the Asterix Publishers. So don’t bother looking for it on Amazon. Two great Asterix fans, Daniel and Minifig made a valiant efforts to translate the "UDERZO CROQUÉ PAR SES AMIS" comics into English, and much later I decided to further translate one of the short stories from that book in Bengali.

European comics means Asterix and Tintin. But Goscinney/Uderzo’s other works, like "Luc Junior" and "Jehan Pistolet" have not yet been  translated to English. I hope some day “Mighty Translation” team take the wishes of comic lovers in consideration and translate all the great works done by Herge, Uderzo & Goscinney.

Rip Kirby - The Affairs of Crusher Twickham

Rip Kirby is an important form of the mid-century detective genre. Cartoonist 'Alexander Gillespie Raymond' inspired the realist comic style seen first in his "Flash Gordon" strip and later in Alex Kotsky’s "Apartment 3-G". 

Rip Kirby is a cool detective who plays piano, crazy smart, gets involved with some of the most beautiful women ever to grace the comics pages and has adventures that take him all over the world. In an introduction by Tom Roberts, Raymond says: "Rip is a conglomeration of all the likable qualities I have seen in men I know."  Rip has a personal butler, 'Desmond' - a reformed criminal of some sort, is feisty and loyal and very clever himself and assists with investigating when needed. Girlfriend Honey Dorian is trouble-prone and too understanding of Kirby’s involvements with other women, and one of the more likeable beauties to grace the strip.

Raymond's realistic style and skillful use of "feathering" (a shading technique in which a soft series of parallel lines helps to suggest the contour of an object) has continued to be an inspiration for generations of cartoonists. The clean lines, emphasis on shadows, and sophisticated style well suits the private-detective image.

Alex Raymond received a Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 1949 for his work on Rip Kirby.

'The Affairs of Crusher Twickham' is a decent, mystery adventure for Rip and Desmond - Honey Dorian is not much around here. In this story Desmond’s old friend tries to become a gentleman to woo a lady, but it turns out the lady works in a club and her boss sees dollar signs. The story mostly follows Desmond, and Rip is not that much of principal focus in the storyline.

Asterix and the Soothsayer

It was a dark and stormy night in the Gaulish village. The townsfolk are worried the sky will finally fall on their heads. A sinister figure arrives in the little Gaulish village. 'Prolix', who claims to be a soothsayer, and predicts that the weather will improve after the storm. Low and behold, it does !! He starts living off the village, making positive prophecies for those who bring the best stuff. Now the credulous villagers believe every word he says, but Asterix has his suspicions of the smooth-talking Prolix. Who is really right about the soothsayer? The Romans get wind of what's going on and capture the soothsayer, since soothsaying is forbidden by law. The soothsayer admits he's a shyster, which the Romans sort of believe. They use him to frighten off the villagers, thereby finally claiming total conquest of Gaul. Can Asterix convince the people to go back? Will the Romans sort out whether the soothsayer is for real or not?

Trivia:
1. Sales in France for this album are always slightly lower than for the others. The only plausible explanation is that the disturbing cover may put people off. And yet it's a sheer delight to laugh about the gullibility of our dear Gauls. 

2. An animated film bearing the title 'Asterix and the Big Fight' was released in 1989 but although it contained elements from that album, it was actually more an adaptation of this book. Part of the plot was also used in the first live action Asterix film, 'Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar'.

3. The story includes (page# 9) an illustration of the Roman and Gaulish pantheon of gods. In that illustration, Uderzo includes a drawing of his own country home.

4. A soothsayer's fantastical prediction of the future is illustrated by a photograph of La Défense, the modern district of skyscrapers outside Paris.

5. The scene at the bottom of page 10, where the characters observe the disembowelment of a fish, is a reproduction of Rembrandt's painting Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.

6. Unhygienix, though depicted bare-footed in the series, can be seen on the cover wearing the brown footwear that the other male villagers wear. These are also seen in page 5, during the beginning of the storm scene, but he shown barefooted in the remainder of the scene and the book

7. On page 9 an Augur tells Caesar that "as long as Brutus is near you, O Caesar, you will have nothing to fear", in the authors' reference Caesar's murder.

ডমরু-চরিত - ত্রৈলোক্যনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়

"ডমরু-চরিত কথা অমৃত সমান, 

         স্বয়ং ডমরু ভনে শুনে ভাগ্যবান।"

লেখক ত্রৈলোক্যনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় (১৮৪৭-১৯১৯) বাংলা সাহিত্যের জগতে একটি বিশিষ্ট স্থান অলংকৃত করে আছেন তাঁর উদ্ভট রস-সাহিত্য সৃষ্টির কারণে। ত্রৈলোক্যনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের জীবনের প্রথম অধ্যায় কেটেছিলো বিশেষ দু:খ-কষ্ট, দারিদ্র্যের মধ্যে দিয়ে। অবশ্য পরবর্তী কালে তিনি উচ্চশ্রেণীর সরকারী পদে কর্মরত হন, এবং প্রায় সমগ্র ইউরোপ ভ্রমন করেন বঙ্গবানিজ্যের প্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে। বাংলা সাহিত্যের জগতে তিনি নিয়ে এসেছিলেন এক তাজা, নতুন রসের সন্ধান। তাঁর লেখা বিখ্যাত গল্পসমষ্টির মধ্যে রয়েছে: 'লুল্লু', 'কঙ্কাবতী', 'বাঙাল নিধিরাম', 'পাপের পরিনাম', 'নয়নচাঁদের ব্যবসা', 'ফোকলা দিগম্বর', 'ভূত ও মানুষ', ইত্যাদি। তবে তাঁর রচিত 'ডমরু-চরিত'-এর মতো অসম্ভব মজাদার চরিত্র বাংলা সাহিত্যের জগতে একান্তই বিরল।         

'ডমরু-চরিত' ত্রৈলোক্যনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের শেষ লেখা - প্রকাশিত হয়েছিলো তাঁর মৃত্যুর চার বছর পরে, ১৯২৩ সালে। ডমরু বসবাস করেন দক্ষিণ কলকাতার একটি গ্রামে। তাঁর জীবনের প্রথমার্ধ কাটে নিতান্ত দারিদ্র্যের মধ্যে। কিন্তু পরবর্তী কালে তিনি বিচিত্র কৌশলে বেশ ধনী হয়ে ওঠেন। তাঁর সেই বিশেষ কৌশলগুলির মধ্যে একটি হলো 'কিপটেমি' - তিনি একটি পয়সাও বাজে খরচ করেন না। বিত্তবান হবার সাথে সাথে তাঁর নামেরও বদল ঘটে 'ডমরু' থেকে 'ডমরুধর' হয়ে যায়। তা, আমাদের প্রাণপ্রিয় ডমরুধর বাবু এখন পাকা ইমারতে বাস করেন। গত তিন বছর ধরেই তাঁর বাড়িতে দুর্গোৎসব হচ্ছে। কিন্তু কেন এই দুর্গাপুজো তাঁর বাড়িতে, সেই নিয়েই শুরু হয় তাঁর গপ্পো ! প্রতি বছর দুর্গা পঞ্চমীর সন্ধ্যাবেলায় বাড়ির দালানে বসে ডমরুধর তাঁর ইয়ারবকশিদের সাথে করে চলেন অসম্ভব, অমূলক রসেভরা, অদ্ভুত জগতের গল্পগাছা...   
   

...তিন বৎসর পূর্ব্বে আমি ঘোরতর বিপদে পড়িয়াছিলাম...

ত্রৈলোক্যনাথ মহাশয়ের বেশিরভাগ গল্পই বলা হয়েছে দুর্গাপুজোর দালানে, মায়ের মূর্তির সামনে। তাই আশ্বিন মাসের মিঠে-সোনালী রোদ ঢুকে পড়ে তাঁর নানান গদ্যের মধ্যে। 

যে বাঙালি 'ডমরু-চরিত' পড়েননি, তাঁর বাঙালিত্ব নিয়ে সন্দেহ জাগতেই পারে - এমন কি তাঁকে 'ইনকমপ্লিট' বঙ্গসন্তান বললেও অত্যুক্তি কিছু করা হবে না ! এই পোস্টে সেই বিগত অতীতের ডমরু চরিত্রটিকে আবার হাতের কাছে আনার সামান্য চেষ্টাটুকু করা হলো মাত্র।

প্রেমের গল্প

2010 সাল ছিলো নবকল্লোল সাহিত্য পত্রিকার সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী বর্ষ। পঞ্চাশ বছর পূর্তি উদযাপনের জন্যে বেশ কিছু পরিকল্পনা নেওয়া হয়েছিলো, তার মধ্যে অন্যতম ছিলো বাছাই করা কিছু ছোটগল্প নিয়ে একটি গল্পসংগ্রহ প্রকাশ করা - পঞ্চাশ বছর পূর্তির জন্যে পঞ্চাশটি ছোটগল্প। কিন্তু গল্প বাছাই করতে গিয়ে দেখা গেলো সেটা এক বিষম দুরূহ ব্যাপার। তার কারণ পঞ্চাশ বছর ধরে পাঁচশোরও বেশি সংখ্যায় প্রকাশিত হয়েছিলো কম করে তিনহাজার ছোটো গল্প। শেষ পর্যন্ত ১৩৬৭ থেকে ১৩৯৬, এই তিরিশ বছরের সংখ্যাগুলি থেকেই পঞ্চাশটি গল্প বাছাই করা হয়ে থাকে। গল্প নির্বাচনের ক্ষেত্রে লেখকের নাম-ধামের বদলে গল্পের উৎকর্ষের দিকেই প্রাধান্য দেওয়া হয়েছিলো।

সেই বই থেকে চারটি প্রেমের গল্প এখানে একত্রে দেওয়া হলো। প্রথম গল্পটি হলো 'তারাদাস বন্দোপাধ্যায়' যিনি মূলত: অতিলৌকিক গল্প রচনায় বিশেষ মুন্সীয়ানার পরিচয় দেখিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু তিনি যে কিছু প্রেমের গল্পও লিখেছিলেন তা আমরা অনেকেই জানি না। দ্বিতীয়টি মতি নন্দীর লেখা - একটু অন্য রকমের প্রেমের গল্প। শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা গল্পটি কিছুটা চেনা প্যাটার্নের - আবার অতীন বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের লেখাটা বেশ অন্যরকমের।

'সোফা-কাম-বেড'- সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়

সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায় ছিলেন 'রসায়ন' বিজ্ঞানের ছাত্র। শিক্ষকতা দিয়ে তিনি তাঁর কর্মজীবন শুরু করেছিলেন - সরকারী চাকরিও করেছিলেন বেশ কিছু কাল। বিখ্যাত এক রাসায়নিক প্রতিষ্ঠানে অ্যানালিষ্টের চাকরিতে কর্মরত থাকা অবস্থায়, তিনি তাঁর জীবনের প্রথম হাসির গল্পটি লেখেন। রঙ্গ-ব্যঙ্গের লেখার মধ্যে মূল্যবোধ ও মানবিকতার অদ্ভুত মিশেল লক্ষ্য করা যেতো তাঁর গল্পগুলির মধ্যে। বিশেষ করে বাঙালি যৌথ-পরিবারের নিজস্ব দোষ-ত্রুটি-চাহিদার মধ্যে ফল্গুধারার মতো লুকিয়ে থাকা স্নেহ-ভালবাসা-শ্রদ্ধার মুহূর্তগুলিকে অসাধারণ মুন্সীয়ানায় তিনি তুলে ধরেছিলেন পাঠকদের কাছে।   

সেই সুদূর ছোটবেলায় খুব সম্ভবত 'রুকু-সুকু'-র গল্প দিয়েই তাঁর লেখার সাথে আমার পরিচয় ঘটেছিলো। আজন্ম যৌথ-পরিবারে মানুষ হয়ে ওঠা আমার বাড়ির চেনা-জানা চরিত্রগুলোকেই যেন আমি বারবার করে খুঁজে পেতাম তাঁর লেখা বিভিন্ন গল্প-উপন্যাস গুলির মধ্যে। তাই সেই গল্পগুলিকে আমার কখনোই গল্প বলে মনে হতো না - বরং মনে হতো আমার নিজেদের বাড়িরই কোনো এক সময়ের ঘটনা - ঠিক যেন অনেকটা 'প্যারালাল ইউনিভার্স'-এর কনসেপ্ট !!  

হাসির গল্প অনেকেই লিখেছেন, লিখে চলেছেন, আর লিখবেনও - কিন্তু সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের লেখার মতো এমন 'হাসি-হিউমার, ঘাত-প্রতিঘাত, দুঃখ-সুখের টানাপোড়ন ও শ্বাশত জীবনবোধে ভরপুর কথা-সাহিত্য যে ভবিষ্যতে আদৌ পাওয়া যাবে, সে ব্যাপারে আমি নিশ্চিত নই।

এই পোস্টে আমি তুলে ধরলাম আজ থেকে প্রায় ৩৬ বছর আগেকার এক হাসির গল্প, 'সোফা-কাম-বেড'। এই গল্পবইটি আমি খুব সম্ভবত: ঢাকুরিয়ার কাছে গোলপার্কের একটি পুরানো বইয়ের দোকান থেকে নাম মাত্র মূল্যে কিনেছিলাম। এটিতে সোফা-কাম-বেড ছাড়াও আরও ১১টি ছোট গল্প আছে, তবে শুধুমাত্র 'সোফা-কাম-বেড' গল্পটির জন্যেই আমি এই বইটি কিনেছিলাম। যখন আমি ক্লাস এইটে বা নাইনে পড়ি, তখন আমাদের বাড়িতে আমার মেজদা চাকরি পাবার কিছু পরে দুটি রেডিমেড সোফা কিনে আনেন। সাদামাটা, রেক্সিনের কভারে মোড়া দুটি বেশ লম্বা সোফা - পিছনের স্ট্যান্ডটা খুলে দিলেই হেলান দেবার অংশটি সোজা হয়ে গিয়ে দিব্যি চওড়া শোবার জায়গা হয়ে যায়। তবে আজকালকার দিনের দামি সোফা-কাম-বেড-এর পাশে সেই সেদিনকার সাধারণ 'সোফা-কাম-বেড' দুটিকে রাখলে, তাদের আজ বড়োই করুণ ও মলিন দেখাবে। কিন্তু সেই সোফা-সেট দুটি বাড়ির কোন কোন জায়গায় রাখা হবে, তা নিয়ে আমাদের পরিবারে শুরু হযে যায় কি দারুণ উত্তেজনা, আর সেই সাথে একটু মন-কষাকষির ভাব - ঠিক সেই গল্পের 'সোফা-কাম-বেড'-এর চরিত্রগুলির মতো করেই। প্রতিদিন সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠেই আমরা দৌড়ে এসে সোফায় বসে পড়তাম - পারলে দিনের যাবতীয় কাজকর্মই যেন সেই সোফায় বসে সেরে ফেলবার চেষ্টা করতাম !! কিছুদিন পরেই সেই সোফা-দুটির জন্যে পাড়ার দর্জিকে ডেকে নিয়ে এসে স্পেশাল দুটো কভারও বানানো হয়। যথারীতি সেই কভারের রং-ডিজাইন পছন্দ করা নিয়েও আবার কি বিষম বিপত্তি শুয়ে হয়ে যায় !!  

'সোফা-কাম-বেড' গল্পটি সেই সময় অ্যাতোটাই জনপ্রিয় হয়েছিলো যে 'আকাশবাণী' থেকে এই গল্পটির একটি শ্রুতিনাটক তৈরী করে তা খন্ডে খন্ডে প্রচার করা হয়েছিলো। তরুণ বন্দোপাধ্যায়, মমতাশংকর, রমাপ্রসাদ বণিক সহ তখনকার দিনের বেশ কিছু জনপ্রিয় ও বিখ্যাত অভিনেতারা এই শ্রুতি-নাটকটিতে অংশ নিয়েছিলেন। বেশ কিছুকাল পরে সেই শ্রুতি-নাটকটি ক্যাসেট হিসাবেও বার হয়, খুব সম্ভবত: 'HMV', বা 'ইনরেকো', কিম্বা 'রাগিণী' রেকর্ডিং কোম্পানি থেকে, আজ আর ঠিক মনে পড়ছেনা। আমার ছোটদা একসময়ে সেই ক্যাসেটটি কিনে এনেছিলেন। আমরা সবাই মিলে একসাথে বসে কারণে-অকারণে কতোবার যে সেই নাটকটি আমাদের সেই আদ্যিকালের টেপ-রেকর্ডারে শুনেছিলাম, তার কোনো ইয়ত্তা নেই। স্রেফ সেই নাটকটা শোনার জন্যে আত্মীয়স্বজন থেকে পাড়ার কতো লোক আমাদের বাড়িতে আসতেন সেই সময়ে...

আজ আমাদের বাড়িতে সেই সোফা-সেট দুটি এবং সেই সোফাদুটিতে বসে থাকা চরিত্রগুলির মধ্যে অনেকেই আর নেই আমার সাথে। যাঁরা এখনো বা টিকে আছেন তাঁদের সাথেও আর সেই আগেকার দিনের মতো ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক আর নেই। শুধু সঙ্গে আছে সেই পুরানো শতছিন্ন 'সোফা-কাম-বেড' গল্পবইটি, আর সেই শ্রুতিনাটক ক্যাসেটটির ডিজিট্যালাইজড MP3  - সেই দুটিকেই মাঝে-মধ্যে রি-ওয়াইন্ড করে পড়ি, আর শুনে চলি - আর এইভাবেই চোখ বন্ধ করে সেই হারিয়ে যাওয়া সোনালী দিনগুলোকে, সেই হারিয়ে যাওয়া অতিপ্রিয় মানুষগুলিকে একটু একটু করে ছুঁয়ে ধরার বৃথা চেষ্টা করি. . .

মানুষের জীবন অনেকটা নদীর মতো - বাঁক খেয়ে খেয়ে এদিক ওদিক যেতে যেতে সে অগ্রসর হয়। ঘটনার প্রতিনিয়ত: ঘাত-প্রতিঘাতে পড়ে পড়ে তার জীবনের ধারা বদলাতেই থাকে। কখনো কখনো কিছু কিছু ঘটনা সে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারে, কখনো বা উল্টোটাই হয়। যেমন আমার জীবনে বেশিরভাগ সময়েই দেখেছি আমি যা যা করবো বলে ভেবেছি, বাস্তবে হয়েছে ঠিক তার উল্টোটাই - সত্যি বলতে কি উল্টোটাই নিয়তি আমায় ঘাড় ধরে করিয়েছে। প্রেমের ক্ষেত্রেও এই ব্যাপারটা সত্যি - চেষ্টা করেও যেরকম প্রেমে পড়ার কল্পনা আমার কিশোর মন করে এসেছিলো, বাস্তবে কিন্তু তা হয়ে ওঠেনি।  হয়তো বা এই আলোচ্য উপন্যাসের নায়ক, রাতুলের মতো ঝোঁকবশত: কিছু করে ওঠার বুদ্ধি বা সাহস সেই বয়সে সৃষ্টিকর্তা দেবার প্রয়োজনটুকুও বোধ করেন নি। 

প্রেমের গল্প লেখার দৌড়ে বাংলা লেখক-সাহিত্যিকদের মধ্যে কে এগিয়ে আছেন, বা ছিলেন সেটা একটা রীতিমত তর্কের ব্যাপার। মান্না দের গান যেমন বাঙালী যুবকদের মনে প্রথম প্রেমের বীজ বুনে দেয়, তেমনি করেই কথাসাহিত্যিক শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের 'শ্রীকান্ত' উপন্যাসের হাত ধরেই বাঙালি কিশোরদের প্রেমের হাতেখড়ি সম্পূর্ন হযে যায়। সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের 'লোটাকম্বল' পড়ে যেমন অভিভূত হয়েছিলাম, সমরেশ মজুমদারের 'এই, আমি রেণু' পড়েও একসময় কান্নায় গলা বুজে এসেছিলো। অতীন বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের 'ঝিনুকের নৌকা'ও এক অসম্ভব কষ্টের প্রেমের গল্প। পরিণত বয়সে হুমায়ুন আহমেদের 'হিমু' চরিত্রসহ তাঁর লেখা আরো বেশ কিছু গল্প-উপন্যাস মনকে বেশ নাড়া দিয়েছিলো। তবে শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা প্রেমের গল্পগুলি ছিলো কিছুটা অন্য মাত্র্রার। জীবনের দেখা-অদেখা নানান রূপ-বর্ণ-ছন্দ, মানুষের টানা-পোড়েনে তিনি এক স্বপ্নের মায়াজাল বুনে চলতেন, ঠিক যেমন করে তাঁতঘরে বসে দক্ষ কোনো তাঁতী বিচিত্র বর্ণের সুতো দিয়ে সৃষ্টি করে চলেন অপূর্ব নকশিওয়ালা কাপড়। উচ্চ-মধ্যবিত্ত জীবনের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকা অ-সুখের ক্লেশ, অসূয়ার কাঁটা, অনিশ্চয়তার সংকটের মধ্যে দিয়েই তিনি দেখিয়েছিলেন কি অদ্ভুতভাবেই না ঔদাস্য রুপান্তরিত হয়ে যায় আবেগে, আর প্রত্যাখান প্রেমে...

প্রথম যৌবনে পড়া এই 'গতি' উপন্যাসটি আবার করে মধ্যযৌবনে এসে পড়লাম, এবং বিস্ময়ের সাথে লক্ষ্য করলাম যে অনেকটা প্রথমবারের মতোই অভিভূত হয়ে পড়েছি, যদিও কাহিনীর শেষে কি ঘটতে চলেছে তা কিন্তু আগে থেকেই ছিলো জানা !!

'গতি' হলো শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা অনেক পরের দিকের প্রেমের উপন্যাস। 'গতি' মানে যেমন 'চলার বেগ', আবার তেমনি 'গতি' মানে 'পরিনতি'। ছিপছিপে, মেদবর্জিত এই উপন্যাসেও ঘটনাগুলি ঘটে যায় এক অসম্ভব দ্রুততায়, এবং সুনিয়ন্ত্রিত বিন্যাসে। কাহিনীর মধ্যে দিয়ে লেখক আপন নিপুণ ভঙ্গীতে ও দক্ষ শিল্পী-হস্তে এঁকে গিয়েছেন সর্বদ্রষ্টা ও সর্বনিয়ন্তার এক অসামান্য আলেখ্য - স্থির থাকলেও নিরন্তর অব্যাহত যাঁর গতি. . . . .

Dunc & Loo (Bengali) by John Stanley

John Stanley was an American cartoonist and comic book writer, best known for writing Little Lulu comic book stories from 1945 to 1959. Besides strips about little kids in the early '60s John Stanley did some teenage books, including Around The Block with Dunc & Loo and Thirteen Going On Eighteen.

John Stanley (March,1914 – Nov,1993) 

"Around the Block with Dunc & Loo" was written by Stanley but he didn't draw. The illustrator was Bill Williams, a veteran of the old Jerry Iger Studio (Phantom Lady), who also collaborated with Stanley on the short-lived Kookie. It was a teenage humor comic which, unusual for the genre, didn't emulate the appearance of Archie.

Dunc was "classically handsome", with regular features and neatly-combed black hair, and always well dressed, with a coat and tie. He focused on girls, practically to the exclusion of everything else. His main lust object was Beth O'Bunnion, whom he met in the first issue (Oct-Dec 1961). Much of the action involved him trying to avoid Beth's protective father or appease her hulking, brutish brother, Buddy.

Loo was Dunc's best pal. He was also obsessed with girls, but not so mono-maniacally. He had unkempt red hair and usually dressed sloppily, in jeans and T-shirts. Loo had a kid brother, Joey, who sometimes had separate adventures, opening the comic to young kid humor as well as the teenage variety. All of the regulars lived in the same New York City apartment building.

Readers seem unanimous in their opinion that every page of every issue of "Around the Block with Dunc & Loo" was hilarious. Still, it lasted only eight issues. The final one was dated Oct-Dec 1963.

Lucky Luke - The Equal of Wyatt Earp (Book# 50)

'লাকি লুক', নামটা শুনলেই মনটা একটু আনচান করে ওঠে। টিনটিন, অ্যাস্টেরিক্সের পরেই আমাদের চেনাজানা পছন্দের ক্যারেক্টারগুলোর মধ্যে বেশ উপরের দিকেই থাকবে 'লাকি লুক'।  

লাকি লুক খুবই ব্যস্ত মানুষ - ওয়াশিংটনের কোনো হাই-প্রোফাইল প্রজেক্টে জড়িয়ে না থাকলে, তিনি ব্যস্ত থাকেন জেল-পালানো 'ডালটন' ভাইদের পিছু ধাওয়া করতে। কিন্তু এ ছাড়াও লাকি লুকের এক অন্য জীবন আছে। সেই জীবন থেকে তুলে নেওয়া সাতটি ছোট গল্পকে একসাথে করে এই নতুন বই: "Seven Stories" 

যে সাতটি গল্প এই বইতে আছে সেগুলি হলো:

5. The Peddler
6. Dangerous Crossing
7. Sonata in Colt Major

দুই ও চার নম্বর গল্পটির বঙ্গানুবাদ করে এখানে আপলোড করা হলো। দুটি গল্পের মধ্যেই কিছুটা প্রেম ঘটিত ঘটনা জড়িয়ে আছে। সাধারনত: পপুলার কমিকসের ক্যারেক্টাররা 'প্রেম' জিনিষটাকে একটু এড়িয়েই চলেন (রোম্যান্টিক কমিকসের কথা বাদ দিয়ে !) - সেই দিক দিয়ে দেখলে এই দুটি ছোট গল্প অন্য এক আবেদনের স্বাদ এনে দেবে। কেমন লাগলো পড়ে, তা অবশ্যই দু-এক কথায় জানাবেন। পাঠকদের কাছ থেকে তেমন সাড়া পেলে হয়তো বাকি কয়েকটি গল্পও বাংলায় দেওয়ার কথা ভাবা যাবে।
