হ্যালডেন বলেছিলেন - সত্য যে কল্পনার চেয়েও বিচিত্র শুধু তাই নয়, আমাদের কল্পনা যতদূর পৌঁছয় সত্য তার চেয়েও অদ্ভুত [ "I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose..."]

Iznogoud - The Relentless

There was an old saying, "You can make a man out of a boy, but you cannot take the boy out of a man". In the days of PlayStations, iPad, Cartoon channels, Superhero movies, do our kids actually read? Tough question indeed - but truth is there have always been children more interested in reading than others. In fact, kids who do not like reading books, read comics. The adventures of Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke, Phantom, Mandrake, Rip Kirby or Archie are part of our living memory and still kicking up a storm.

Who can ever forget Getafix from the Asterix series, or Tintin’s cantankerous companion Captain Haddock? Well, the good news is that the comics are still around and doing well.

The post Goscinny era led to a downfall in comics quality and we are too lucky to have few good series are being released in English once again.

Iznogoud Vol. 10  (Nov 2013)

"Iznogoud - The Relentless" contains 5 stories, all featuring devious and conniving Iznogoud, the less than magnificent Grand Vizier of Baghdad the magnificent - all of which are a delightful read.

In this book we have five doomed to fail plots - the invention of Hopscotch as a method to de-Caliph the Caliph, magical seashells to transport the Caliph far from Baghdad, forgetfulness charms, a magical flute for turning Caliph into a canine, and best of all, in the 12-page finale, a wonderful bit of time travelling wonder with a magical Sears catalogue. Each time the covetous Iznogoud sets out with such high hopes, each time these hopes turn to despair, but he never learns, and never, ever listens to long suffering Wa’at Alahf.

That idea that Iznogoud is so in control of every situation, manipulating everything he can, even down too ripping off the forgetful charms merchant for change… and yet never able to finally get the thing he truly wants – that’s so funny.

Iznogoud is classic funny. But it’s classic Goscinny. The two are practically inseparable.

Catch As Catch Can

Gil Jourdan is a Belgian, Paris-based detective comic strip created by Maurice Tillieux. It is considered a great combination of mystery, adventure and humor, and a masterpiece of European comics. Gil has a Bachelor of Law degree - he is young, earnest, shrewd and cool-headed. No mystery can stand up to him and he has quite a merit in solving them given the people he has to work with.

Gil's no mere Tintin in a trenchcoat, either. He's a crafty investigator, a snappy dresser with a degree in criminalogy, a caustic sense of humor and a fierce loyalty to his ex-con assistant (Libellule), and his fiercely loyal tomboy secretary (Queue-de-Cerise). His police contact, and sometime-foil, is Inspector Crouton, a thirty year cop, honest but not overly swift, who owes much of his professional success to Gil's brains and occasional helping hand.

From the start Jourdan was hardly the sort of hero who was out for Justice in itself. His main motivation was earning money and exposing a gang of drugs smugglers was really a means of obtaining a big break from which he profited in many ways.

Series like "The Adventures of Tintin" are based in spotlessly clean homes and locations, where as Jourdan's world is made up of dusty offices, littered streets, wet docks and mud-splattered farms. Fast and furious car chases also added to its popularity.

Catch As Catch Can" is a tensed detective tale where  a criminal named 'Joe the Syringe' breaks from prison. However not only did Joe jump down a few stories and survive, but it seems with almost super powers he was able to also jump over a 20-foot wall out of the prison. Before you know it, reports of a man hopping across rooftops like a grasshopper come in, and as an insurance agent targeted by Joe disappears, Gil and the gang are stuck right in the middle.

Maurice Tillieux (1921 – 1978)
(Belgian writer and comic artist)
Maurice Tillieux' death in a car accident in 1978 brought an end to the series, though a number of short stories by other artists were drawn and published in homage to him and Jourdan some ten years later. The day of the accident that cost his life, he had an argument with his wife and later she committed suicide using a gun that was part of the collection of Tillieux.

Lucky Luke - Dick Digger's Gold Mine (Book# 48)

The "Dick Digger's Gold Mine", written and drawn by Morris, is an album containing two stories from serial publication in Le Journal de Spirou during 1947, namely "Dick Digger's Gold Mine - 24 pages" (La Mine d'or de Dick Digger) and "The Look-Alike of Lucky Luke - 22 pages, without a title" (Le Sosie de Lucky Luke. Together they were released as the first official Lucky Luke hardcover album in 1949.

Among the very earliest Lucky Luke work (produced the following year after the first story, Arizona 1880), these two stories were published before Morris began his five year stay in US. The artwork of the two stories (which shows obvious differences although created only months apart) demonstrates the changes from the earliest style to what would become the settled Lucky Luke expression. At this point the Jolly Jumper character had not yet been given the power of speech.

The end of "The Look-Alike of Lucky Luke" marks one of the very few times Lucky Luke kills the villain. The final duel of Lucky Luke et Phil Defer originally ended with the death of the latter. Although, in the censored version, the doctor then declares him simply injured but his shoulder in such a state that his career as a gunman is over. Bob Dalton (cousin of the less fierce Daltons) also met a violent end in the story Hors-la-loi, though after the original Spirou publication this was judged to be too bloody by La commission française de surveillance des publications destinées aux jeunes after new restrictions by the law of 1949, and softened for the album reissue, with the Daltons simply being hanged and buried.

These stories also feature caricatures of people from Morris' circle, notably André Franquin, Will, and the fathers of Morris and Eddy Paape.

Morris (Maurice de Bevere) - Dec 01,1923 - July 17, 2001

Plot:
In "Dick Digger's Gold Mine (24 pages)", Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper meet an old friend, the prospector Dick Digger in extasty over a recent gold ore discovery, en route to register his gold mine claim in Nugget City. Celebrating loudly at a saloon, Digger is identified as a target of robbery by two hardened criminals, and after assaulting him alone in his room, they get away with his gold and a map leading to the gold find. The following day, Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper take up pursuit following their trail.

In "The Look-Alike of Lucky Luke (22 pages)", Luke discovers he causes fear in the inhabitants of a town, because he is remarkably similar to a notorious villain named Mad Jim, currently in prison and scheduled for hanging. Spotted by two thugs who are Mad Jim's associates, Luke is ambushed and knocked out in a scheme to replace him with the doppelgänger in a drunken sheriff's jail cell, in order to get a share of Mad Jim's loot. Taken without doubt for the dangerous villain, Lucky Luke barely escapes the mob lynching before he is able to pursue the criminals and bring them to justice.

The Strange Encounter - Blake & Mortimer

Cinebook has given us many excellent new adventures that appear nostalgic, and yet have a present time point of view. Mortimer and Blake are a terrific team of British heroes. Mortimer is a grumpy Scottish physicist, Blake is an RAF soldier-spy type. The two have appropriately dashing adventures - atomic science, time travel and the occult are all mixed up with the everyday business of running the Empire.
This is a great science-fiction story, and the return of past villainsWe get the return of Colonel Orlik and a major villain from an earlier story. Once again, we get hints of what happened in the first B&M story, "Secret of the Swordfish" which has been published in English much later to this story.

Other Fact:
While Cinebooks has published this as their 5th volume in the B&M series, but this is really the 15th volume, and its one of several, done by the team of James Van Hamme & Ted Benoit - but not really done by EP Jacobs, who created the series.

Synopsis: The two gentlemen-spies travel to America and take on a 177-year-old evil. Blake and Mortimer head to the United States to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the discovery of a 177-year-old body, which appears to have died very recently. The body is that of a Scottish major, Mortimer's ancestor, who was leading a British military expedition to the US in 1777 when he was swallowed up by a strange, multicolored light-beam shining down from the sky. A secret message accompanies the corpse, that is identified as Lachlan, this is equally mysterious. What does "Yellow King 8061, Danger, Light, Plutonium, H Poplar Trees, Temple 1954' mean? Blake and Mortimer fight men in black armed with green-laser guns and soldiers emerging from the past in order to save the Earth from complete obliteration.

This is not merely a juvenile adventure. European series have appealed to all age levels and make no apologies for mature themes. Read that fantastic Sci-Fi comics here.

The Inimitable Birbal - ACK

ACK - Birbal Stories (3 out of 7)

Lucky Luke - The Singing Wire (Book# 35)

Another Sunday evening is approaching - time to settle down on the side of your sofa set and then have a wonderfully relaxed, old fashioned and simple fun time in the wild, wild west. You must know what I mean, right? Yessss !! It's time for a new Lucky Luke Adventure !!

Author: Morris
Born and raised in Belgium, Morris moved to the United States in 1946 for six years, where, he worked for MAD magazine and met Rene Goscinny, with whom he collaborated from 1955 until Goscinny's death in 1977.

Luke proposes a cigarette with 'Morris'
Goscinny also created the "Iznogoud" series with illustrator Tabary, published in English by Cinebook, and the hugely successful "Asterix" series with illustrator Uderzo.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This is a tale from 1977, towards the end of Goscinny and Morris’ collaboration on the tales of the "Man who shoots faster than his own shadow". This is one of the best comedy stories of Lucky Luke where he got involved with the joining of the telegraph (the singing wires of the title) and then it all goes, from one set-piece to another, gag to gag to gag.

Synopsis: 1861. Abraham Lincoln orders that the First Transcontinental Telegraph line, currently interrupted between Nevada and Nebraska, be completed. Two teams, one heading east from Carson City and the other west from Omaha, will meet up in Salt Lake City. Lucky Luke joins the eastbound team. But when a $100,000 reward is offered to the first team to arrive, there’s suddenly more to fear than the natural obstacles of the journey: A saboteur seems to be at work!
